HWL Ebsworth Hack: Multiple Australian Government Departments and Agencies Affected

Australia’s newly appointed cyber security coordinator confirmed that multiple government departments and agencies were affected by the HWL Ebsworth hack that occurred in April.

In his first-ever statement as the national cyber security coordinator, Darren Goldie shared insights about the data breach at HWL Ebsworth.

According to Goldie, several Australian government entities have been affected by the HWL Ebsworth cyber attack, “…with sensitive personal and government information released,” he added.

“I am actively engaging with HWL Ebsworth to understand the complete picture of this incident, including how their private industry clients have been impacted, as the data analysis continues.”

Among HWL Ebsworth’s notable clients are the big four banks and the federal health department.

The attack was first reported when one of the world’s most sophisticated Russian cybercriminals known as AlphV or BlackCat claimed to have posted more than 1 terabyte of stolen data on the dark web, which was later established to be 3.6TB worth of data after hacking the law firm in late April.
